Wine and Cheese Tasting at Fairview Winery at Paarl

Fairview is a third generation, family owned wine and cheese farm, on the south-west-facing slopes of Paarl Mountain. It is best-known for its huge selection of goat cheese of various flavors and full-range world-class wines.

Fairview Wine and Cheese estate is one of the most visited attractions in the Cape winelands. There is also a cute mid-sized restaurant on the farm, which is housed in a converted wine cellar.

Wineries often offer specialty food paired with their own wines. Fairview is also not an exception.

The smoked trout wrap with resin is surprisingly good and totally exceeded my expectation. The wrap is slightly crispy, and the salty flavor of the smoked trout blends harmoniously with the sweetness from the resin and the creamy goat cheese produced at the farm.

Take a bite of the wrap, paired with a ripe local tangerine and avocado. It's heavenly

Shopped for some delicous jams, bread and goat cheeses. This is another day in South Africa I could not help wondering what a wonderful place with all those great wines, cheese and food. :)

Garden Route Day 2 - Prettending to be a Photographer in the Cango Caves

I brought two cameras for the trip, one serious one and one point-and-shoot. It does take some time to fuss around the camera and the tri-pod to get a right shot, not necessarily great. :)

So, given the time limit of the tour, I also took a few random shots with my point-and-shoot, and kept thinking "What if those pictures from the point-and-shoot turn out to be better than the ones from my serious camera?" I would be very disappointed then. :)

After seeing all those pictures, I feel relieved. After all, better camera does take better pictures. :)

Garden Route Day 2 - The Cango Caves

Many places in the Western Cape wowed me. South Africa is simply a stunning place filled with nature beauties and wonders. One of them is the Cango Caves.

The Cango Caves are located in Precambrian limestones at the foothills of the Swartberg range in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The principal cave is one of the country's finest, best known and most popular tourist caves and attracts many visitors from overseas.

The Cango Caves is one of the worlds great natural wonders, sculptured by nature through the ages - fascinating limestone formations in a wide variety of colours. An underground wonder world

The present tourist route extends for 1,2km into the cave, with a further 4,1km being kept closed to the public for conservation reasons.

Quite hot and humid inside.

Garden Route Day 2 - A Close-up at Some Predators in South Africa

Originally used only by hunters, the term 'Big Five' refers to five of Africa's greatest wild animals - lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino.

Cheetah, a beautiful and fast animal.

It's just more fun and exciting to watch predators than vegetarians.

Hearing the lions crushing the bones of a donkey makes me having goose-bumps on my arms. Not a pleasant sound to enjoy at all.

Garden Route Day 2 - Dinner at Turban Island Cafe of Knysha

Got to Knysha around 5ish. Still got some time to take a walk around the bay and the water front. Ran into a realy cute cafe, hotel and spa called "Turban Island Cafe".

It was converted from a turban factory that used to manufacture wood and chips. All the tables and lounge charis are surrounded by the turban machinaries. Walking around in the restaurant, I felt like I was on a boat or something. Facinating!

The decoration of the place is unique, classy and very cute. Each table has non-maching chairs.

The wine celler nested among turbon machines. Where can you get this type of decoration?!

My type of restaurant!

Food is excellent. The chef came out and talked to Kate and me. He is cute, a pleasant surprise too. :)

Garden Route Day 1 - Lunch at Joubert-Tradauw of R62

The garden route, as the longest wine land road in South Africa, is considered as one of the coolest drives in the world. How can it be cool, if there is no good food along the road? Since it has so many wineries along the road, we might as well lunch at one of them - Joubert-Tradauw of R62 is today's choice for lunch.

Kate, another woman from east coast of the US, and I was not sure what to expect for the lunch. Kate, a Martha-Stewart-alike, is a super-gourmet cook who once hosted a "white" and a "purple" theme of dinners with 6 to 8 courses paired with great wines.

Steve, our tour guide, must have had tons of pressure building in them as the lunch hour was approaching. "What type of place could satisfy those two picky women?"

As soon as we walked in the front yard of the restaurant/vineyard, we instantly were attracted to its cute, unique and unpretentious decoration style.

The place not only offers wines but also produces all sorts of fresh fruits. The lunch served in this restaurant is a typical "farm-style" food in South Africa, no elegant touch of presentation, no imported and expensive ingredients, but simple, non-pretentious tastes from the most fresh locally produced veggies, fruits, cheeses and meats.

The lunch included roasted beets, yellow peaches, white peaches, potatoes, and Rosemary roasted chickens. It was simply wonderful and spoiling our tasting buds. I have to admit that many flavors from this big plate I haven't tasted in the US or anywhere else before.

During the entire lunch, we could not stop raving about it and thanking Steve, our tour guide, for taking us to such a special place. By the end of the lunch, we have pretty much fallen in love with the little place.

The happy chef who is holding a Rosemary roasted chicken hot from the oven. She also baked some pumpkin bread and olive bread to go with freshly home-made apple cot jam. Delicious!

One the right, it's the chicken curry with roasted apple cot on top. Again, simply out-of-the-world-delicious.

Let's try a "strategic bite" of pumpkin bread, apple cot jam with roasted yellow peach.

This is the type of place I feel I can sit around for ages to enjoy a cup of cappuccino, or a glass of nicely chilled Chardonnay and a sunny afternoon.

Reached Cape of Good Hope

A trip to Cape Point is a must for any Cape Town visitors. The southern end of the Cape Peninsula boasts two points of interest really, the Cape of Good Hope and the more southernly and a bit higher situated Cape Point.
